Shell Bitumen Plant - Tank Upgrade and Relocation

Port Adelaide Construction was contracted by Shell Australia to carry out the relocation and modification of three (3) tanks at their Birkenhead works. The largest tank, measuring 24 meters in diameter and weighing 157 tonne, had to be lifted off its existing footing and placed on an adjacent newly constructed footing. Relocating such a large vessel required the design and fabrication of a substantial lifting beam assembly which could be used for all three (3) tanks. It was also necessary to carry out comprehensive lift studies and risk analysis' prior to each lift to ensure every lift was carried out Safely and Successfully.

In addition to the 24 meter tank, two (2) 15 meter diameter tanks weighing 75 tonne each had to be walked approximately 500 meters and placed on new footings in the plants tank farm. Construction of a temporary roadway, crossing an existing railway corridor and road, had to be undertaken ensuring a smooth and accessible path for the 600 tonne Demag CC2800 Crawler crane.

Port Adelaide Construction installed new floors to both 15 meter diameter tanks and fabricated and installed new nozzles in all tanks. A new stair tower, crossovers, pipe bridges and loading gantry also formed part of the work scope.

Pasminco Port Pirie Smelter - $3.5 million Granulation & Dewatering System

The Slag Granulation project for Pasminco Port Pirie Smelters encompassed multiple aspects of the engineering and construction industries. Port Adelaide Construction was contracted by Paul Wurth International to undertake the project management, procurement, fabrication, transport and installation of two (2) 6 meter diameter bins and structure, pipe work and associated supports pumps  and valving. The installation of pipe work involved over 70 different pipe runs with diameters ranging from 25mm to 450mm. The main slurry lines were fabricated from Basalt lined pipe due to the abrasive nature of the slurry.

Fabrication of the structural steel, pipe work, pipe supports and bridges was undertaken in our Adelaide workshop. In addition to these items the dewatering bin roof sections and base sections were prefabricated then transported to site as complete units, leaving the remaining wall plates to be assembled and installed onsite.

Taking into account that the plant was still operating during the majority of the installation phase the project was carried out Safely and on time.
